Las hornacinas callejeras históricas desaparecidas y las que se conservan en la actualidad en Lorca (debido a los terremotos del 2011 algunas han sido demolidas o desprendidas de la pared), son indicadoras de una mentalidad devota y tienen la función de sacralizar el espacio urbano, constituyendo elementos significativos y característicos de la religiosidad de tradición medieval, del devocionismo durante el Barroco, y de la religiosidad popular de mediados del siglo XX. Subsisten a pesar del escaso interés institucional por ponerlas en valor, dado su interés cultural y turístico que demandan, manteniéndose presentes en algunos edificios o casonas históricas, con el evidente peligro de desaparecer.

The historic religious street niches missing and preserved today in Lorca after the earthquakes of May 2011 (most of them have been demolished or detached from the wall houses), are indicative of a culture devoted and have the function to consecrate the urban space, constituting significant elements characteristic of the medieval religious tradition, the Baroque devotions, and popular religion of the middle Twentieth century that persist despite the small institutional interest in them in value, given its cultural and tourist demand, remaining present in some buildings or historic houses, with the obvious danger of disappearing.
