En el siglo XIX, numerosos viajeros franceses visitaron las Islas Baleares. Su texto viático, lejos de ser una reflexión objetiva de la realidad, nos transmite una mirada en el otro lleno de estereotipos y presupuestos. Intentaremos analizar cómo esta mirada en el insular Balear no puede destacarse de dos representaciones culturales del siglo XIX, la de la isla y la de la España romántica. Respondiendo a las expectativas de esta sociedad francesa que esperaba encontrar en España un universo totalmente opuesto a su cotidiano, un mundo primitivo lleno de magia oriental, y en toda isla, la isla de los Afortunados, los viajeros retratan a un insular a medio camino entre el Paraíso y el Oriente.

In the XIXth century, many French travellers visited the Balearic Islands. Their travel writing, far from being an objective reflection of the reality, conveys a gaze on the Other full of stereotypes and assumptions. We analyze how this gaze on the Balearic islander comes from two cultural representations of the XIXth century, the island representation and the romantic Spain representation. Responding to the expectation of the XIXth century French society, who hoped to find in Spain an universe completely opposite to its daily life, a primitive world full of oriental magic, and in all islands, the fortunate island, the travellers portray an Islander half way between Paradise and Orient.
