  • After the conquest of Granada by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in 1492, the city retained a large arab-speaking population during the first half of the XVI century. The city records and bylaws (1552) are thus a rich source for the study of words of Arabic origin, particularly those related to aspects of urban life in that century. This paper deals with ten such words and how they represent social and economic aspects of life in the capital city of the Kingdom of Granada, namely: alhóndiga, alamín, almotacén, alcaicería, motalefe, jeliz, zaguaque, albalá, farda and trujamán
