En los últimos tiempos se han publicado numerosas obras sobre los aspectos progresistas que habría tenido el catolicismo en el periodo barroco (siglos XVII y XVIII) de la historia latinoamericana, sobre todo el llamado ethos barroco: la mentalidad colectivista favorable a la solidaridad y la fraternidad. Esta forma de religiosidad popular también ha fomentado tendencias colectivistas, antiliberales y anticosmopolitas en la mentalidad de la región andina, y ha preparado el terreno para el populismo de la actualidad con su énfasis en el paternalismo de las élites y el infantilismo de las masas.

Numerous works have been published in the last years on the progressive aspects that Catholicism might have had in the baroque period (17th and 18th centuries) of Latin American history, especially on the socalled baroque ethos: the collectivist mentality, akin to solidarity and fraternity. This form of popular religiosity has also fostered collectivist, antiliberal, and anticosmopolitan tendencies in the mentality of the Andean region. It has also paved the way for present populism with its stress on the paternalism of the elites and the infantilism of the masses
