    A research topic and premiss of early historical archaeology is the dualism of Franks and Alamans. Through the analysis of the cemetery at Eppstein (Palatinate), the limits of a purely statistical-empirical approach become evident. In the early Merovingian period, it is especially important that the range of problems concerning the (polyethnic?) character of the pre-Frankish population of late antiquity, as well as the non-Frankish but Germanic section of the population, be given proper consideration in inner-Frankish land-consolidation. Furthermore, archaic-seeming burial customs of the later Merovingian period are not always based upon an unbroken continuity with the past. Therefore, the interpretation as an expression of migration period ethnicities will be compared with the model of a new formation of identities within the Frankish empire of the Merovingian period.

    Le dualisme entre Francs et Alamans est un sujet de recherche et une condition de l'archéologie de l'Antiquité tardive et du Haut Moyen-Âge. L'analyse de la nécropole d'Eppstein (Palatinat) a permis de mettre en évidence les limites d'une démarche purement statistique et empirique. Pendant la période mérovingienne ancienne, les problématiques tournant autour du caractère (polyethnique?) de la population tardo-antique, pré-franque, ainsi que non-franque mais à composante germanique, ne doivent surtout pas être négligées, concernant l'aménagement du territoire intérieur franc. De plus, les nécropoles supposées archaïques de la période mérovingienne récente ne sont pas toujours fondées sur une continuité ininterrompue. Le modèle de la formation nouvelle d'identités à l'intérieur même dy royaume Franc à l'époque mérovingienne est ici confronté à l'interprétation considérant qu'il s'agit de l'expression de différentes ethnies de la période des Grandes Invasions.

    Forschungsgegenstand und Prämisse der frühgeschichtlichen Archäologie ist der Dualismus zwischen Franken und Alamannen. Bei der Analyse des Gräberfeldes Eppstein (Pfalz) wurden die Grenzen einer rein statistisch-empirischen Vorgehensweise deutlich. In der älteren Merowingerzeit dürfen vor allem die Problemkreise um den (polyethnischen?) Charakter der spätantiken, vor-fränkischen Bevölkerung sowie nicht-fränkischer, jedoch germanischer Bevölkerungsteile beim innerfränkischen Landesausbau nicht vernachlässigt werden. Zudem gründen sich archaisch anmutende Grabsitten der jüngeren Merowingerzeit nicht immer auf eine ungebrochene Kontinuität. Der Interpretation als Ausdruck völkerwanderungszeitlicher Ethnien wurde daher das Modell einer Neoformierung von Identitäten innerhalb des merowingerzeitlichen Frankenreiches gegenübergestellt
