  Resumen El trastorno desintegrativo infantil, también conocido como síndrome de Heller, fue descrito por Theodor Heller en 1908, es un trastorno raro que afecta a uno de cada 50.000 niños. En general, los niños que padecen este trastorno presentan un desarrollo normal hasta los tres o cuatro años para posteriormente comenzar a sufrir una regresión en sus funciones intelectuales, lingüísticas, sus actividades lúdicas y su capacidad adaptativa. Muchos autores lo han definido como una enfermedad devastadora que afecta tanto a la familia como al futuro del individuo.

  Este relato biográfico, desde la narrativa de sus propias vivencias, trata de ilustrar el caso de Josefa, madre de un varón de 24 años afecto de síndrome de Heller. La informante expone el proceso de la enfermedad de su hijo, los primeros síntomas, el diagnóstico, el desconcierto inicial, así como el mecanismo personal de duelo, afrontamiento, superación y adaptación a la nueva realidad familiar.

  Abstract (Intellectual disability: Experiences of a mother with a child affected Heller syndrome) The Childhood disintegrative disorder also well known as a Heller syndrome, was described by Theodor Heller in 1908. It is a rare disorder that affect 1 in 50.000 children. Overall, children who suffer from this disorder present a normal growth till they reach 3-4 years. Then, they start to suffer a regresion of their intelectual, linguistic functions, their dynamic activities and their capacity for adjusting. Most authors have defined it as a devastating illness that affects not only the family but also the future of the child. This biographic account attemtps to illustrate, from the testimony of Josefa own experiences, a case study. She is the mother of a 24 year-old man who developed Heller syndrome. Josefa relates her son´s illness process, his first symptoms, the diagnosis, the initial bewilderment as well as the mechanism for dealing with pain, confrontation, overcoming and adjustment to the new family reality
