El catalán en la Franja de Aragón: una aproximación histórico-lingüística

    Las circunstancias históricas acontecidas en la que hoy denominamos Franja de Aragón favorecieron la presencia de la lengua catalana allí y su asentamiento, y así se explica que en la actualidad todavía pervivan variedades del catalán occidental en dicha área, incluidas las de transición. El catalán fue en esta zona la lengua usual, junto al latín, en la administración municipal y notarial durante toda la Edad Media y hasta prácticamente la abolición de los fueros de Aragón en 1704, aunque a partir del siglo XV se inició un progresivo abandono del catalán escrito en favor del castellano. Sin embargo, en la documentación conservada aparecen soluciones que nos acercan a la realidad dialectal de esta área de Aragón en aquella época, incluso en los textos escritos únicamente en castellano, puesto que en ellos no dejan de surgir elementos que remiten a la lengua viva de esta zona de frontera lingüística.

    The historical circumstances that occurred in what we call today, Franja de Aragón, favoured the presence of the Catalan language there, as well as its settlement, thus explaining why some varieties of Western Catalan still exist in this area, including the transition varieties. Catalan was the customary language, together with Latin, in the municipal and notarial administration during the entire Middle Ages, and until practically the abolition of the fueros of Aragon in 1704, although there was a progressive abandonment of written Catalan in favour of Castilian from the 15th century onwards. However, solutions appear in preserved documentation that bring us closer to the dialectal reality of this area of Aragon at that time, even in the texts written exclusively in Castilian, as elements that refer to the living language of this linguistic frontier area are continually arising.
