La relación entre el Estado y la Religión en los orígenes del Estado uruguayo siguió un camino similar que el resto de las repúblicas latinoamericanas. Destaca la injerencia propia de un derecho de Patronato, que el Gobierno ejerció durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX, como prerrogativa que creía legítima, basada en una Constitución que consagraba la religión Católica como la oficial. El último cuarto del siglo XIX y las dos primeras décadas del XX supusieron la irrupción y el desarrollo de un modelo laicista, con la consiguiente reforma constitucional, que contribuyó a dar una identidad muy peculiar al Uruguay. La misma se caracterizó por la radical separación Estado-Iglesia, y la prescindencia de lo religioso, marginado al ámbito privado de las personas. El fin del siglo XX y el comienzo del nuevo siglo y milenio nos han deparado una situación de ambigüedad, dado que si bien aún se mantiene el modelo laicista, hay signos que representan atisbos de esperanza en orden a ir avanzando hacia la laicidad y la libertad religiosa en su máxima expresión.

State-Religion relations have followed a path similar to that of the rest of the Latin American republics since the origins of the State in Uruguay. The right of Patronage was exerted by the government during the XIXth century and until the beginning of the XXth, as a privilege believed to be legitimate, on the grounds that the Constitution established the Roman Catholic Church as the State religion. The last quarter of the XIXth century and the first two decades of the XXth saw the irruption and development of a secularist model, with its consequent constitutional reform, which contributed to design Uruguay's very particular identity. This identity was characterized by a radical Church-State separation and imposed prescindence of religious issues by the State, besides relegation of religious phenomena to the private sphere. The decline of the XXth century and the dawn of the new century and millennium have shown an ambiguous situation, because even though the secularist model still remains in force, some signs of hope are glimpsed, revealing some approaches towards secularity and towards thorough fulfilment of freedom of religion or belief.
