El pasado español en el sur del Sáhara Occidental, concretamente en la península atlántica de Río de Oro, es aún perceptible a través de las construcciones, tanto civiles como militares, que con diferentes estados de conservación permanecen todavía en su entorno. Los noventa y dos años de presencia española en Río de Oro dejaron su impronta en la actual ciudad de Dakhla, que con el nombre de Villa Cisneros se creó y desarrolló desde finales del siglo XIX al amparo del fuerte militar y de la primigenia factoría comercial de la Compañía Mercantil Hispano-Africana.
The Spanish past in the south of Western Sahara, specifically on the atlantic peninsula of Río de Oro, is still perceptible through constructions, civil and military, that are still in their surroundings with different conditions of preservation. The Spanish presence in Rio de Oro, during ninety-two years, it left their trace in the present city of Dakhla, that with name of Villa Cisneros was created and developed from the end of the 19th century under the protection the militar fort and the primitive trading post of the Hispano-Africana Trading Company.
