la veracidad desempeña una función intersubjetiva primordial en la comunicación verbal. Puede considerarse como la manifestación prototípica del principio de la cooperación conversacional tal como se plasma en la máxima de cualidad. En las culturas occidentales, la imagen positiva del individuo se valora ante todo en virtud de su propensión a respetar la máxima. Por este motivo, los usuarios de la lengua tienden a enfatizar el carácter veraz de sus contribuciones al intercambio verbal. Procediendo de esta manera, manifiestan una actitud que se puede calificar de autocortesía o autoafirmación. La veracidad entra en juego no sólo cuando se cumple la máxima de cualidad, sino también cuando se incumple. En el último caso es frecuente que se generen implicaturas conversacionales de diversa índole, entre las que resalta el uso de la ironía.

the truthfulness performs a primordial inter-subjective function in the verbal communication. This can be considered as the prototypical manifestation of conversational cooperation principle such it is expressed in the quality maxim. In western cultures, individual`s positive image is assessed on the virtue of its tendency to respect the maxim.
Therefore, the language users trend to emphasize the truthful character of their contributions to the verbal interchange. Moreover, an attitude, that is possible described such as self-courtesy or self-affirmation, is showed. The truthfulness plays its role no only when the quality maxim is met but also when it is not. In the latter case, it is frequent that diverse conversational implicatures are generated, among them, the irony.
