Resumen de Helminth fauna of crenicichla mandelburgeri (perciformes, cichlidae) from iguaçu river, Paraná low, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil: partial results

  • Crenicichla mandelburgeri is a cichlid fish species described in 2009 and is popularly known in Brazil as "joaninha". This species is endemic to the Paraná-Paraguay basin and due to its restricted distribution and recent description, there are no parasitological studies including this cichlid. This study aims to report the helminth fauna of C. mandelburgeri from Rio Iguaçu, Paraná State, Brazil. Eight specimens of C. mandelburgeri were collected from May 2011 to September 2012 with the aid of gillnets. Fish were euthanized and surveyed for parasites with aid of stereomicroscope in the laboratory of Zoologia dos Invertebrados da Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná UNIOESTE, Campus Cascavel, Paraná, Brasil. Nematodes were collected and fixed in hot 70% ethanol. Trematodes subjected were fixed with 70% ethanol under slight coverslip pressure. For identification, trematodes were stained with hydrochloric carmine and diaphanized in creosote, and nematodes were cleared with phenol. The morphological and morphometrical analysis were performed using a computerized system for image analysis. Seven taxa of parasites, including four of the Nematoda phylum, two of Trematoda class, and one of the order Isopoda were registred. Among the nematodes, it was observed the occurrence of Procamallanus (Procamallanus) peraccuratus (Nematoda, Camallanidae) (n = 9) in the small intestine [Prevalence (P) = 50%, mean intensity of infection (IMI) = 2.5 ± 0.62, mean abundance (MA) = 1.12 ± 0.51), P. (Procamallanus) sp. (n = 3) in the small intestine (P = 25%; IMI = 1.5 ± 0.5; MA = 0.33 ± 0.26), third state larvae of Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda, Anisakidae) (n = 1) in the tunica adventitia of the small intestine, and unidentified nematode larvae (P = 87%; IMI = 12.42 ± 10.43; MA = 10.87 ± 9.17). The trematode Genarchella genarchella (Derogenidae) (n = 2) was found in the small intestine and a female specimen of Artystone bolivianensis (Crustacea, Isopoda) (n = 2) in the celomatic cavity. Two metacercariae (Trematoda, Diplostomidae) encysted in the pectoral fin of a fish were found. The present study showed a high parasite diversity despite the low number of animals analyzed until the moment. Further analyzes will be conducted in order to describe the structure of parasite communities that host species.
