Sucesso escolar e Inteligência Emocional

    Educational Success is a matter of the greatest relevance for students, parents, teachers and educational institutions. It is important to understand the elements which may influence the performance and success of the students, namely those in higher education. This study seeks to identify how the Emotional Intelligence (EI) relates to educational attainment in the students of the degree course in nursing of the Escola Superior de Saúde de Viseu.

    Methodology: The data collection was carried out in September 2011, with a sample of 287 students and the type of study is characterized as quantitative non-experimental, descriptive-correlacional study of cross-section. For the collection of data we use a socio demographic and academic questionnaire and an emotional intelligence (EI) scale by Rego & Fernandes (2005).

    Results: Gender, marital status, commuting time to school and scholarship do not influence the Educational Success of students. Age is an influencing factor over all studied means, and the student�s residence only influences the theoretical mean.

    The semester the student is attending also influences his/her educational success. Globally, the EI factors have influence on the Educational Success.

    Conclusion: The results found in this study invites to a reflection on the implementation of strategies to develop in students the emotional intelligence to improve school success and in particular in the area of clinical teaching.

    O Sucesso Escolar é uma temática de relevante interesse para estudantes, pais, professores e instituições escolares.

    Torna-se importante compreender os fatores que poderão influenciar o desempenho e o sucesso dos estudantes, nomeadamente dos que frequentam o ensino superior. Este estudo procura identificar o modo como a Inteligência Emocional (EI) se relaciona com o Sucesso Escolar nos estudantes do curso de licenciatura em Enfermagem da Escola Superior de Saúde de Viseu (ESSV).

    Metodologia: A colheita de dados efetuou-se em Setembro de 2011, numa amostra de 287 estudantes e o tipo de estudo caracteriza-se como quantitativo não experimental, descritivo-correlacional, de corte transversal. Para a colheita de dados utilizámos um questionário de caracterização sócio demográfica e académica e uma escala de avaliação de Inteligência Emocional (EI) da autoria de Rego & Fernandes (2005) Resultados: O género, o estado civil, o tempo de deslocação até à escola e o possuir bolsa de estudo não influenciam o Sucesso Escolar dos estudantes. Verificámos que a idade e o semestre que os estudantes frequentam têm influência sobre os resultados escolares. Os fatores da escala da Inteligência Emocional exercem influência sobre o Sucesso Escolar.

    Conclusão: Os resultados encontrados neste estudo convidam a uma reflexão sobre a implementação de estratégias que permitam desenvolver nos estudantes a inteligência emocional, de forma a melhorar globalmente o sucesso escolar e, de modo especial, na vertente do ensino clínico.
