There are two main types of models for explaining the compressiona/ and extensiona/ tectonics of the Iberian Chain: models of «tectonic phases», involving sequences of different primary stress fie/ds, and models which postulate a single geodynamic mechanism as being responsible for al/ of the structures. The complexity of the tectonic evolution of the Chain invo/ves a non-homogeneity of the stress field both in space and time, so that neither of these two points of view can, on their own, yield a satisfactory solution
