Jean Valjean y Rastignac: dos modelos extremos de comprender la libertad en el héroe decimonónico

    Through two universal characters, Jean Valjean and Eugène de Rastignac, French decimononic narrative offers two heroic models as two different views of the world:

    one embodies Victor Hugo’s social ideas, and the other Honoré de Balzac’s ones. In this paper, we suggest a study focused on the heroe’s fight against destiny in order to develop several oppositions between chance and fate. This duality is the central idea in the work of both novelists. Finally, we will analyze the heroe’s work aiming to undersand how the ethical behavior trascends fiction to emerge into the real world.

    À travers les personnages de Jean Valjean et de Eugène de Rastignac, le roman français du XIXème proposera deux modèles de héros appréhendés comme des cosmovisions opposées : l’une incarnera les idées sociales de Victor Hugo, et l’autre celles d’Honoré de Balzac. Dans cet article, nous proposons une approche qui s’empare de la figure du héros et sa confrontation avec le destin, afin d’établir une série d’oppositions autour de la dualité hasard-nécessité, entendue comme fondement clé dans l’œuvre des deux romanciers. Enfin, nous réaliserons une série de comparaisons éclairantes autour de la tâche du héros dans le but de comprendre comment les conduites éthiques manifestées dans la fiction trouvent leur projection dans la vie même.
