    The relationship between the individual and the group raises problems only within an intellectual framework which conceives political liberty in negative terms, in the meaning given by Isaiah Berlin to this concept.

    One may then discuss the antagonism between individual and group liberty, the nature of the social conditions required to guarantee individual liberty, as well as the compatibility between liberty and the common good, a concern which is central to any republican policy.

    Les relations entre l’individu et le groupe ne sont problématiques qu’à l’intérieur d’un cadre intellectuel dans lequel la liberté politique est pensée comme essentiellement négative, au sens qu’Isaiah Berlin a donné à ce concept. On peut alors s’interroger sur le caractère antagoniste de la liberté de l’individu et de celle du groupe, sur la nature des conditions sociales de la liberté individuelle et sur la compatibilité entre liberté et bien commun, préoccupation qui se trouve au centre des politiques républicaines.
