La función de las preguntas en un discurso agonal: el debate electoral cara a cara

    Pese al escaso interés despertado hasta la fecha por el análisis pragmático de las preguntas en el debate electoral, todavía más sorprendente si consideramos la atención que se ha dispensado a otros géneros del discurso político, estudios como el presente -a partir de un corpus integrado por seis debates cara a cara celebrados en España en los últimos años- muestran la funcionalidad de estos enunciados interrogativos en un discurso característicamente agonal. En este sentido, las preguntas desempeñan un importante papel en diferentes niveles del análisis discursivo. Así, en un plano textual, las preguntas representan hitos en la arquitectura argumentativa de los políticos, quienes a menudo se sirven de estas unidades lingüísticas con el objeto de introducir, orientar o concluir temas y fases relevantes de sus intervenciones. Al mismo tiempo, en el plano informativo estos enunciados se convierten en instrumentos destinados a solicitar información relevante, cuyo destinataria principal es la audiencia, de quien depende en última instancia la suerte del juego electoral. Ahora bien, junto a estas funciones, las preguntas desempeñan también un importante papel de control en el plano interaccional. Control sobre el propio flujo conversacional, mediante la imposición de temas de discusión o la manipulación de los turnos de palabra a través la inserción de preguntas en diferentes fases del debate. Pero control, por encima de todo, sobre el adversario, a quien se dirigen preguntas capciosas, destinadas a desafiar sus ideas y comportamientos, al tiempo que revelan actitudes fuertemente modalizadas en el hablante

    Despite the low level of interest generated thus far by the pragmatic analysis of questions asked within electoral debates, even more surprising considering the attention paid to other kinds of political discourse, studies such as this one -based on a corpus made up of six face-to-face electoral debates held in Spain in recent years- bring to the fore the ways in which these interrogative utterances work within a characteristically agonal discourse. In this sense, such questions play an important role at the different levels of discourse analysis. Thus, at a textual level, the questions concerned represent highlighted points within the argumentative architecture set up by politicians who often make use of these linguistic units in order to introduce, direct or conclude topics, as well as the key phases of their contributions. At the same time, in terms of information-gathering, these utterances become significant instruments whereby to seek relevant information, with the audience as the main target, given that the result of the electoral contest ultimately depends on that same audience. On the other hand, alongside these functions, questions also play an important role as an instrument of control at the interactional level: control over the conversational flow itself, through the imposition of discussion topics or through the manipulation of turn-taking by means of the inclusion of questions at different stages within the debate. But above all, control over the adversary, who becomes the main target of tricky questions, designed to challenge his/her ideas and behaviour, while, at the same time, foregrounding highly revealing attitudes on the part of the speaker
