    En este tiempo intersecular parece oportuno mirar retroproyectivamente el proceso educacional chileno. Para ello, presentamos una breve cartografía cuyos ejes giran en torno a cuatro etapas, tres de ellas necesarias como precedentes para entender la cuarta, en actual proceso. La primera, centrada en el siglo XIX; la segunda, recoge las experiencias de siete décadas del siglo XX; la tercera, sintetiza el período de dictadura militar, y la última, alude a la última década de ambivalente disposición ética en cuanto a la Educación nacional. Si bien las cuatro comparten una problemática común, en lo particular ostentan principios socio-pedagógicos y de valoración que marcan la distinción entre ellas. Se culmina esta revisión crítico-historiográfica con algunas conclusiones propositivas con vistas al futuro del país.

    At this point of change from one century to another, it would seem to be appropriate to take a retrospective look at education in Chile. To this end we give a sketch map with four principal features, three of which are precedents that are necessary to understand the fourth � still in progress. The first is centered on the19th century; the second groups together the first70 years of the 20th century; the third deals with the period of military dictatorship; and the last one, in the last decade of the century, shows an ambivalent ethical attitude toward national education.

    Although all four share common problems, individually they evidence socio-pedagogical and value principles that distinguish them. The critical historiographic review ends with some conclusions about the future of the country.
