    El ciclo cronístico de Alfonso XI introduce la retórica y los ideales de cruzada por vez primera en la historiografía vernácula castellana: de forma moderada en la CAXI, que destaca el apoyo del Pontificado, y de manera entusiasta en el PAO, que limita el papel del papa. Así, Alfonso XI aparece representado como campeón de la Cristiandad. Este cambio en las estrategias propagandísticas y legitimadoras de la crónica real obedece a las nuevas circunstancias en que se desarrollaron las campañas de este rey en el Estrecho:

    la proyección internacional de la Reconquista, debido a la necesidad de ayuda exterior, y el nuevo escenario de las cruzadas del siglo XIV.

    The cycle of chronicles of Alfonso XI introduces the rhetoric and the ideals of the crusade in Castilian vernacular historiography for the first time: moderately in the CAXI, which emphasizes support for the Papacy, and enthusiastically in the PAO, which limits the Pope´s role and portrays Alfonso XI as the champion of Christendom. This change in the royal chronicle´s strategies of propaganda and legitimation is due to new circumstances surrounding the king´s campaigns in the Strait of Gibraltar: the international dimension of the Reconquest, due to the need for external assistance, and the new scenario of the Crusades in the fourteenth century
