    San Francisco de Borja, de quien celebramos este año el V Centenario de su nacimiento, estuvo muy ligado a Andalucía. En primer lugar lo estaba por sangre, pues varios nobles andaluces estaban emparentados muy directamente con él. Mucho más decisivo fue el impacto espiritual que recibió en Granada cuando acompañó el féretro de la Emperatriz Isabel de Portugal, que sus hagiógrafos se encargaron de magnificar. Ya, como jesuita, intervino directamente en la fundación del colegio decano, el de Córdoba, y otros como el de Sevilla, Montilla y Málaga. Su recuerdo se actualiza por la abundante iconografía borgiana que se conserva en esta región, así como por una serie de objetos que pertenecieron a él.

    This year we are celebrating the fifth centenary of the birth of St Francis Borgia, who had various ties with Andalusia. First of all, several Andalusian nobles were closely related to him by marriage. Much more significant, however, was the spiritual impact his biographers say he received in Granada when he accompanied the funeral cortège of Empress Isabel of Portugal and had the duty of identifying the visibly decaying body before its interment. After being received into the Society, he facilitated the foundation of the college in Córdoba, Andalusia’s oldest college, and others as well, such as Seville, Montilla, and Málaga. Abundant iconography and a large number of his personal items serve to keep his memory alive in this region.
