Purpose: To determine the of the safety and efficacy of the use of the Ho:YAG laser in the treatment of proximal ureteral stones in the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota. Methods: Observational descriptive study. All patients who were treated with rigid ureteroscopy and Ho:YAG fragmentation for proximal ureteral stones between May and October 2009 were included. Results:

Twenty four patients were included. 37% of the patients had received alphablocker therapy before surgical intervention was considered. Mean operative time was 100 min. treatment was successful in 91% of the patients. We had two complications. Conclusions: Rigid ureteroscopy with Ho:YAG fragmentation is a safe procedure for the treatment of proximal ureteral stones. Our initial experience is satisfactory, with a success rate of 91%. To our knowledge this is the first report of this kind of approach in our country.
