Resumen de Hábitos y actitudes de las familias hacia la lectura y competencias básicas del alumnado

El trabajo presentado se circunscribe al ámbito de las relaciones entre el contexto familiar y el rendimiento escolar, focalizando la atención sobre el alumnado de quinto curso de Educación Primaria y sus familias. En particular, se ha analizado cómo inciden los hábitos lectores y las actitudes de las familias hacia la lectura sobre el nivel de desarrollo alcanzado por los hijos en la competencia matemática y la competencia en comunicación lingüística. El estudio se ha desarrollado en la Comunidad Autónoma de Andalucía, recurriendo a la metodología de investigación mediante encuesta y tomando en consideración resultados de las pruebas de diagnóstico, aplicadas en centros educativos de esta comunidad a principios del curso escolar 2006-07. Han participado en el estudio un total de 3.859 familias, con hijos en 185 centros de las ocho provincias andaluzas. Los resultados confirman mayores niveles de competencia en el alumnado cuyos padres presentan mejores actitudes hacia la lectura y declaran dedicar mayor número de horas semanales a esta actividad. Se concluye afirmando el interés de estas variables para caracterizar el contexto sociofamiliar en que se desenvuelve el alumno y valorar, en función de éste, los resultados de aprendizaje logrados en las instituciones escolares. Por último, se apuntan algunas recomendaciones que desde la escuela podrían hacerse a padres para incrementar el papel de la lectura en los hogares.

This paper deals with the relationship between the family context and scholastic achievement, focusing on students of the fifth year of Primary Education and their families. Specifically, it analyses the incidence of family reading habits and attitudes towards reading on children's level of achievement on mathematical competence and linguistic communicative competence. The study has been carried out in the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, using surveys as the research methodology and taking into account the results of the diagnostic tests which were applied in the schools of Andalusia at the beginning of the academic year 2006/2007. A total of 3,859 families participated in the study, with children in 185 schools of the eight Andalusian provinces. The results confirm higher levels of competence in students whose parents show better attitudes towards reading and declare they devote a higher number of weekly hours to this activity. In conclusion, the research findings show the relevance of these variables in order to characterize the social family context the student deals with and to assess, taking this context into account, the levels of learning in elementary schools. Finally, we include some recommendations that could be given by schools for parents to increase the role of reading at home.
