Among the multiple attributes that surround the phenomenon of Christian holiness, there are some variables which from the very beginning were presented as "tangible" proofs of the saints' sacred character. Such attributes match the general principle that guided the interpretation of holiness- the latter being understood, according to André Vauchez, as a virtus, that is, an "energy that manifests itself through a body, and perceived in conformity with a certain number of indications of physical order". Such indications include topics as the uncorruptibility of the saints'corpses, the fine scent that these emanated and the wonders worked by their relics -among many possibilities. According to all these premises, this paper attempts to analyze one of the possible manifestations of virtus, focusing on the above-mentioned attribution of agreeable aromas to every saint. In order to achieve this goal, we have used the documentary framework provided by the hagiographical Hispanic corpus from the Middle Ages. In those sources we have identified the use of the "odour-of-sancity" topic and shown how the latter served the purposes of hagiographers in giving shape to an understanding of the sacred that was unique to each period.
