    La palabra humillación se refiere a un acto y una emoción: es el acto de devaluar injustamente a un individuo o a un grupo por parte de otros que tienen el poder de conseguirlo. La humillación es también la emoción que surge cuando la víctima toma consciencia de que dicha devaluación ha tenido lugar. La emoción de la humillación es profundamente dañina para las víctimas, con consecuencias poderosas que aún están por determina completamente. Evelin Lindner, una de las científicas sociales que con más profundidad ha estudiado el fenómeno de la humillación, ha publicado recientemente el libro titulado Making Enemies: Humiliation and International Conflict (2006). En él se advierte del papel que la humillación está jugando actualmente en el desarrollo de algunos de los conflictos más cruentos entre grupos sociales. El presente artículo resume las principales aportaciones de esta obra, completándolas con otras ideas complementarias de otros autores.

    Humiliation refers to both an action and an emotion: it is the action of unjustly devaluating a person or a group by others who have the power to do it. Humiliation is also the emotion that is aroused when the victims are conscious that such devaluation has occurred to them. The emotion of humiliation is deeply damaging for its victims, with powerful consequences that are still to be completely determined. Evelin Lindner, one of the scholars that has studied more deeply the phenomenon of humiliation, has recently published the book Making Enemies: Humiliation and International Conflict (2006). In her book, the author warns about the crucial role that humiliation is currently playing in some of the cruelest social conflicts among groups. The present article summarizes the main ideas of the book, completing them with some other contributions to the subject contained in the works of other authors.
