El presente trabajo analiza el modo en que los informativos de televisión construyen la imagen del mundo, utilizando como base parte de una investigación empírica sobre los telediarios de TVE. Se trata de responder a la cuestión de si los informativos de televisión fomentan la cultura del miedo. Se analiza la literatura científica sobre los factores de noticiabilidad en la información internacional: la corriente crítica subraya el papel deformante de los medios respecto a la imagen de los países periféricos y el factor de los intereses nacionales a la hora de seleccionar los acontecimientos; la corriente profesional estudia empíricamente los llamandos �news values� y concluye que la novedad y la proximidad juegan un papel especialmente relevante. Las conclusiones de la literatura científica se confrontan con el estudio empírico de los telediarios de TVE. La conclusión es que el mundo que se representa es amenazante, institucional e interdependiente, con un enfoque que intenta suavizar los aspectos más negativos. La relación con España es uno de los factores decisivos para que un acontecimiento ocurrido fuera de nuestras fronteras se convierta en noticia.

This paper discusses the way in which the tv newscasts conform the image of the world, using a portion of an empirical investigation on the TVE news. It seeks to answer the question of whether TV newscasts promoting the culture of fear. We analyze the scientific literature on factors that becomes an event in a news in international information: the critical school defends that the media deforms the image of the peripheral countries and stresses the factor of national interests to select events; the professional school explores empirically the �news values� and concluded that the newness and proximity play a particularly important role. The findings of the scientific literature are confronted with the empirical study of the television news in TVE. The conclusion is that the represented world is threatening, institutional and interdependent, with an approach that seeks to smooth the more negative aspects. The relationship with Spain is one of the decisive factors for an event outside our borders becomes news.
