Among the films on the Spanish Civil War there is a significant number of “montage films” which were purposefully constructed from footage of other films. On many occasions the meaning of the original film was radically altered through montage or by manipulating the sound track. The article describes the specialized tools and methods (unavailable to the greater public) available to researchers to identify the origins and dates of every image.
