El concepto de agregación cristalina con morfología no cristalográfica fue engendrado durante la tesis doctoral del autor, dirigida por el Profesor José Luis Amorós. El concepto era, en sí mismo, original, heterodoxo y complejo de asir, pero técnicamente inocuo. Sin embargo, su aplicación en el campo de la detección de vida primitiva, en el de los estudios sobre origen de la vida y en biomineralización, era tremendamente provocador puesto que hacía imaginar alternativas -experimentalmente fundadas- a ciertos presupuestos considerados inamovibles en esas disciplinas. Este artículo rememoro los primeros momentos de mi investigación sobre ese tema bajo la tutela del Prof. Amorós, recorre históricamente las vicisitudes del recorrido intelectual de ese concepto y de sus aplicaciones y resume el estado actual de conocimiento en un momento en que, después de veinte años, nace realmente el interés por el fenómeno de agregación auto-ensamblada.

The notion of crystal aggregation with non-crystallographic morphology was created during the research developed for the PhD. thesis of the author, which was supervised by Professor José Luis Amorós. That notion was, on itself, original, heterodox and difficult to grasp, but technically harmless. However, the application to the fields of primitive life detection, origin of life and biomineralization was highly provocative. The existence of that type of crystal aggregates made possible to envisage soundly and experimentally based alternatives to certain assumptions considered to be well anchored in the theoretical body of these research areas. This paper summarises the first stages of that research under the tutelage of Professor Amorós. It is also an historical trip across the intellectual path to this concept and to their applications. Finally, the current knowledge about the notion of self-assembled crystal aggregation is reviewed. It seems timely after twenty years later, when the scientific community becomes interested in this phenomenon.
