Este artículo ilustra la lenta y compleja construcción por parte de la Iglesia de Roma de los órganos centrales y periféricos destinados al control de la circulación libraria, a través de la confección y ejecución de los índices de libros prohibidos. La incierta definición de las competencias de los tres órganos curiales (la Congregación de la Inquisición, la Congregación del Índice y el Maestro del Sacro Palacio), provocó fuertes tensiones, que tuvieron repercusiones a nivel territorial, donde obispos e inquisidores se disputaron la gestión de la censura

This article illustrates the gradual and complex construction by the Church of Rome of the central and peripheral organs charged with control over the circulation of books through the creation and implementation of indices of prohibited books. The uncertain definition of the competencies of three curial institutions (Congregation of the Inquisition, Congregation of the Index, and the Master of the Sacred Palace) led to strong tensions which had repercussions at local levels, where bishops and inquisitors vied for control over censorship.
