With this article, Josep Maria Fulquet, PhD, closes the circle he opened in two previous articles - “Literal translation vs. free translation: A contribution to the debate” (Trípodos, 11; December 2001), and “On the figure of the translator and the significance of their task in the tradition of the target language” (Ars Brevis, 12;
June 2007) - about the recurrent controversy when talking about translation, and the role of translator as mediator and transmitter of texts from other cultures. As the author explains, these “new proposals” focus on highlighting contributions by Israeli scholars that promote the Polysystem Theory, according to which the social norms and literary conventions in the host culture control the translator's aesthetic criteria, and therefore influence on the translator's decisions.
