    La prolongación de la Acequia de Alzira constituye una de las realizaciones más importantes de la expansión del regadío en la España del s. XVIII. El artículo desvela que esta empresa no fue (en contra de la idea hasta ahora aceptada) fruto de una iniciativa más de la política hidráulica del Estado ilustrado. Se trató de un asunto inicialmente acordado entre la propia comunidad de regantes y el duque de Híjar, cuyo objetivo era llevar las aguas a su señorío de Sollana (Valencia). Posteriormente, debido a la fortísima resistencia de los regantes históricos a hacer efectiva la ampliación por ellos autorizada, el duque adoptó la estrategia de resucitar el rancio privilegio de 1404 y atraerse a su bando a las autoridades estatales, con el señuelo de llevar también el riego a las tierras que el Real Patrimonio poseía en los límites de la Albufera.

    One of the most important tasks about the development of irrigation in Spain during the XVIII century was the extension of the Royal Irrigation Ditch of Alzira. The article clears this enterprise wasn't (against the actual accepted idea) the result of one more of the different initiatives of the illustrated state. At the begining it was really a deal between the irrigation community and the Híjar duke, who wanted to make from his domains at Sollana (Valencia) an irrigated land. Then, ought to the strong resistance of the historic irrigation community to this prolongation that had been authorized, the Duke resolved to revive the old privilege of 1404 and gain the state authorities to his cause with the trick of making fertile also the lands that the Royal Inheritance owned near the boundaries of the Albufera.
