Este trabajo es una réplica a nueve filósofos españoles que respondieron a nuestro ensayo «El Proyecto Gran Simio y el concepto de persona» (Laguna 7, 2000). Explicamos por qué El Proyecto Gran Simio no es antropocéntrico ni especista. Aceptamos que para mostrar por qué debería ser ilegal matarlos, torturarlos o encarcelarlos arbitrariamente, no es necesario argumentar que los grandes simios son «personas», que poseen «derechos» o que pueden «usar» un lenguaje humano. También explicamos por qué, no obstante, los términos «persona, «derechos» y «uso» del lenguaje han sido empleados justificadamente en este contexto.

This paper is a reply to nine Spanish philosophers who wrote in response to our essay «The Great Ape Project and the concept of person» (Laguna 7, 2000). It explains why The Great Ape Project is not anthropocentric or speciesist. We grant that it is not necessary to argue that the great apes are «persons», posses «rights» or can «use» a human language in order to show why it should be illegal to kill them, torture them or arbitrarily imprison them. We also explain, however, why the terms «person», «rights» and «use» of language have been justifiably employed in this context.
