La presencia de los partidos de izquierda en el gobierno de los países de Europa occidental ha ido disminuyendo, lo que marca el fin del ciclo de la izquierda tecnocrática y reformista al estilo «tercera vía». Este fracaso se explica por el impacto negativo de la globalización y la europeización sobre su electorado tradicional, por las promesas incumplidas de la revolución educativa y por la falta de respuestas ante fenómenos sociales fundamentales como la inmigración. Para recuperar terreno, la izquierda deberá reorientar su estrategia, desembarazándose del economicismo cerrado sin abandonar la apelación estratégica al centro de la sociedad. Solo así podrá enfrentar con éxito los desafíos del conservadurismo light.

The presence of Left-wing parties in the governments of Western Europe has recently been drastically reduced, and this marks the culmination of a cycle dominated by the technocratic and reformist Left identified with the «third way». This failure can be explained by the negative impact of globalization and europeanization on its traditional electorate, by the failure to realize the promised educational revolution and by the lack of solutions for fundamental social phenomena such as immigration. In order to recover, the Left needs to change its strategy, and free itself from a narrow economicism, without abandoning the necessary appeal to the Center. This is the only way to confront the challenge of «light» conservatism.
