    La mayoría de las éticas modernas suelen sustituir la virtud de la prudencia por la categoría de deber. El filósofo jesuita Baltasar Gracián actualizó la doctrina aristotélico-tomista de la prudencia introduciendo el concepto de ingenio. Gracián considera que la virtud de la prudencia es imprescindible para la formación moral de la persona. Jorge Vicente Arregui es uno de los que mejor han sabido captar la originalidad de la moral ingeniosa de Baltasar Gracián.

    Most of the modern ethics usually substitute the virtue of prudence for the category of duty. The jesuit philosopher Baltasar Gracián actualized the aristotelian-thomistic doctrine of prudence by introducing the concept of "ingenio". Gracián considers that the virtue of prudence is essential for the moral formation of the person. Jorge Vicente Arregui is one of those who have been able to catch best the originality of the "ingenious" morals of Baltasar Gracián.
