Resumen de Religious thought in Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (1645-1700): a mirror of "criollo" spirituality in New Spain

Alicia Mayer González

  • It is common to think of seventeenth century Mexico as a very complex reality. A way to shed new historical light on the subject is through the narrative voice of key figures, such as Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, a Mexican savant and representative of seventeenth century Creole society. This work will focus on Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora's religious conscience, the product of broad cultural experience, because it offers valuable insights into the religious thought of colonial society. The aim, here, is to describe certain facets, maybe previously unknown, of this extraordinary man's personality which hopefully will enrich our view, enabling us to acquire a wider perspective, particularly with respect to the criollo way of thinking and spirituality.
