Los "negocios" de Luis XIV en Madrid: la acción de sus embajadores en la corte madrileña

    Entre 1660 y 1700 Luis XIV envió 24 representantes acreditados ante el rey católico, de los cuales 7 pueden considerarse embajadores residentes aunque ninguno de ellos permaneció allí más de seis años. Aunque éste no fue el único asunto que trataron allí, todos compartieron en mayor o menor grado una misma expectativa, que el rey de España muriera sin heredero legítimo, y una misma esperanza: que la corona española recayera en un candidato Borbón. A ello se refería la mayor parte de la información que sus enviados a la corte madrileña debían captar y enviar. Por ello éstos tuvieron que empeñarse en trabajar para convencer a los subditos del monarca católico de apoyar, o de no oponerse, a que Luis XIV, el Delfín o Felipe de Anjou heredaran el trono hispano de los Habsburgo. Sus negociaciones estuvieron en gran parte encaminadas al mismo fin: incorporar la corona española sin lucha.

    Louis XIV sent 24 accredited representatives to the court of the Catholic king between 1660 and 1700; among these only seven can be considered ambassadors, though none of them remained in Spain more than six years. Even though it was not the only subject treated, all the representatives shared to a certain degree a singular aim, that the King of Spain should die without an heir; and a hope, that the Spanish crown fell to a Bourbon candidate. Most of the information that his representatives had to apprehend and dispatch was in regard to these topics. Consequently, the diplomats had to work intensively to convince the Catholic king's subjects to support, or at least not oppose, the inheritance of the Habsburg Spanish throne by either Louis XIV, the Dauphin, or Philip d'Anjou. Their negotiations were significantly focused on one particular aim: the acquisition of the Spanish crown without war.
