The history of translations, especially during the Renaissance, of Spanish books into English, and of English books into Spanish reflects clearly the degree of communication, the ups and downs in the relationship between both countries. The same year in which the English College was founded in Valladolid a book chivalry, an influential and popular genre of the moment, was translated from Spanish into English. From chivalry books to sentimental novels, from picaresque and pastoral novels to Don Quijote, all types of fiction were translated from Spanish into English. And not only fiction, devotional literature was also translated, from the great mystics and spiritual authors to some of the dissidents.
Translations from English into Spanish on the other hand came later, and at slower speed, although the first book in English to be translated into a modern European language, Gower's Confessio Amantis, was translated into Spanish by the middle of the 15th century.
