The grammatical description of 'and' does not say much of the wide range of meanings in which this connective is involved in actual utterances. Also, the ambiguity of 'and' is such that, in many cases, it cannot be solved by any of the linguistic sciences alone. These sciences have made their own contribution to the task, and the main question is to find out what that contribution is and where it lies. In this paper it is stated that, in the end, a pragmatic analysis is the ultimate level at which we can attempt to reveal the complete meaning of ambiguous constituents with 'and'.
