    Nuestro objetivo en este artículo es discernir la naturaleza del régimen cubano contemporáneo. No es éste un ejercicio académico o meramente retrospectivo. El régimen (antes y ahora) es el punto de partida para cualquier futuro desarrollo y condicionará las posibilidades y la dirección de la evolución política del país. La parte I de este artículo explora la que creemos fue la fallida transición cubana al post-totalitarismo a mediados de los años ochenta y la (parcial) confirmación del totalitarismo al entrar en los noventa. La parte II examina a continuación la naturaleza de los cambios experimentados por el régimen y la sociedad durante la década de los noventa, lo que nos lleva a caracterizar el régimen en su período más reciente como �carismático y post-totalitario temprano�. La conclusión analiza las implicaciones de esta caracterización para el cambio de régimen y el futuro después de Castro.

    The purpose of this paper is to analyze the nature of the contemporary Cuban regime. It is not meant to be a mere retrospective or academic exercise. The regime (in the past and nowadays) is the starting point for any future development and will condition both the possibilities and direction of the political evolution of the country. Part I in this paper deals with what we believe was the failed Cuban transition to post-totalitarianism in the mid-80s and the (partial) confirmation of totalitarianism at the beginning of the 90s. Part II examines the nature of the changes undergone by the regime and society during the 90s, what makes us characterise the regime as �charismatic and early post-totalitarian� in the most recent period. The conclusion analyzes what this characterization implies for the change of regime and the future after Castro.
