The positions adopted by law enforcement officials with regards to a qualificative and quantitative sociological inquiry into relations between the sexes in the French national police are described. Various methods reveal the same ambivalence – police officers waver between self-restraint and heroism, between officialese and a concern for authenticity – thus expressing the difficulty of an occupation that is both heroized and disparaged. This raises questions about qualifications specific to the police concerning presentation of the self to others.

Il s’agit de restituer l’ensemble du spectre des postures policières à l’égard de l’investigation sociologique à partir d’une recherche qualitative et quantitative sur les rapports sociaux de sexe dans la police. De ces diverses méthodes ressort la même ambivalence : les policiers oscillent entre la retenue et l’héroïsation, la langue de bois et le souci d’authenticité, marquant la difficulté qu’impose l’exercice d’un métier à la fois héroïsé et dénigré, invitant à s’interroger sur les compétences proprement policières en matière de présentation de soi.
