Este ensayo estudia la memoria editorial del boom latinoamericano creada por escritores y agentes literarios que participaron en dicho fenómeno editorial. A partir de una discusión sobre la ¿leyenda Balcells¿, este artículo examina entrevistas a escritores latinoamericanos y artículos periodísticos sobre las figuras claves del boom con el fin de ofrecer la visión de Latinoamérica que se desprende de los mitos editoriales creados en los años 60 y 70 y que, en cierto modo, siguen vigentes hoy en el mercado editorial. Este ensayo rescata uno de los elementos borrados u olvidados en dicha memoria, las ¿historias de papel¿. Éstas, en sentido literal y figurado, condicionan el éxito literario del boom a la política de expansión editorial y de la industria papelera en las últimas dos décadas del régimen franquista.

In this essay I examine the editorial memory as created by writers and literary agents who participated in the publishing of the Latin American Boom. Following an examination of the legendary agent Balcells and interviews with Latin American writers and newspaper articles about the key figures of the Boom, I explore the view of Latin America that emerges from the editorial myths of the 1960s and 1970s and that, in a sense, remains in today¿s literary market. I use the figurative and literal title of my essay, ¿Paper (hi)stories¿, to explain how the editorial memory of the Boom forgets the overhaul of the paper industry and the expansionary practices of the book industry undertaken during the last two decades of the Franco regime.
