    En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el interés por la Edad Media se mantuvo tan vigente y en auge como en la primera, aunque adquiere unas características distintas, propias del momento cultural y estético que se está desarrollando. En la ficción breve de la prensa ilustrada se observa cómo la influencia del Realismo se manifiesta en diversos aspectos de su configuración; además, el positivismo de la época se refleja en el modo de tratar los contenidos y en la mayor carga de erudición. Estudiando los relatos que aparecen en la prensa ilustrada, la presencia en los fantásticos de Hoffmann y Poe es llamativa, tendencia que convivirá con una marcada desmitificación de unos siglos que habían sido idealizados por el Romanticismo. Finalmente, la transición al Modernismo se realizará hacia los años 80, bajo el advenimiento de nuevos valores estéticos.

    In the second half of the nineteenth century, the passion for the Middle Ages was pervasive and as relevant as in the first half. But the medievalist movement gained then some concrete features that belonged to the new cultural and aesthetic interests of the time. In this brief narrative Realism and Positivism¿s influence is obvious in some aspects, for example in a great charge of erudition or in the writing about the everyday life in the past. When studying narrations that appear in illustrated papers, we realize that Hoffman and Poe¿s influence is impressive in fantastic tales, a trend that goes along with a strong demythologization of the centuries that have been idealized by Romanticism. Finally, the transition towards the Modernist movement will take place during the nineteen-eighties, with the arrival of new aesthetic values.
