From the results obtained from 99 bottom trawls carried out between 202 and 1293 m depth on the continental slope of the Catalan sea, the abundance and distribution of both Symphurus nigrescens Ralinesque, 1810 and Symphurus ligulatus (Coceo, 1844),_ the two species belonging to the family Cynoglossidae present in the area, are analyzed. On the one hand, S. nigrescens was caught on hauls between 200 and 700 m depth, with a maximum abundance and biomass between 300 and 400 m. On the other hand, S. ligulatus was captured from 500 m depth to the lowest depth-stratum sampled, being more abundant on the upper limit of its distribution range (down to 900 m depth). The results suggest a bathymetric segregation of both species, probably as a consequence of the interspecific competition for the same trophic resources.
