    En el presente artículo se hace una revisión de la evolución seguida por el concepto y el método de la Epigrafía a partir de los años centrales del siglo XX. En él se pretende reivindicar la trascendencia que para la Epigrafía ha tenido la obra del Prof. Navascués. Se insiste en que la mayoría de las tendencias historiográficas que actualmente se siguen en la investigación epigráfica parten del citado autor, así como en la necesidad de situar la inscripción en su contexto histórico, social y cultural, como única vía para entender y comprender el llamado “hecho epigráfico”.

    In the present article a revision of the evolution of the concept and the method of the Epigraphy from the central years of the twenteeth century is done. It intends to claim the significance that has had the work of the Prof. Navascués for the Epigraphy.The majority of the historiographic tendencies split of the cited author. Likewise it is important to situate the inscription in its social, historic and cultural context, as only way to understand the “epigraphic habit”.
