  • Resumen
    • Beyond the question of purely armed conflict, the civil war in Spain has been characterized as a war of memory. Jorge Semprún referred to it as the battle of “the two memories”, a battle which continued long after the weapons had been laid to rest. One clear terrain for this battle was in film productions.

This essay takes up a specific episode of the battle that occurred in Spain during the 1970s with the premiere of Frédéric Rossif’s French film Mourir á Madrid, which was considered politically offensive to the Franco regime. Eduardo Manzanos retaliated with another film called ¿Por qué morir en Madrid?, which was essentially an invective against the French film’s “lies” (sic). The film, however, curiously fell victim itself to censorship and was prohibited from being shown. The author resorts to direct censorship documents to reconstruct the story behind ¿Por qué morir en Madrid?, one of the most fascinating episodes in the war of memory
