In recent years, films have been affected by a series of industrial and technological changes and by new patterns of consumption. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary to show the relationships among economic structures, technology and consumption. Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding was the point of departure for a series of investigations which combined textual analysis with sociological, anthropological, and ethnographic analyses.
Indeed, ethnographic analysis has proved to be a highly useful instrument for studying the forms through which the media (and hence, film) become a part of the spectator’s life.
Through an ethnological study of consumption, it is possible to address questions regarding how cultural and national identities abstract are constructed.
