    El presente artículo aborda el estudio del concepto de nacionalidad, tanto en su dimensión jurídica como desde el punto de vista politológico, así como la relación existente entre nacionalidad y ciudadanía europea. Ambos conceptos designan un estatus particular de la persona configurador de un amplio abanico de derechos y deberes ejercitables por el hecho de pertenecer a un determinado Estado-nación o por disfrutar de una específica ciudadanía, o como ocurre en el ámbito de la Unión Europea a partir del Tratado de Maastricht de 1993, por unirse nacionalidad y ciudadanía como dos realidades jurídico-políticas que actúan al unísono, sin llegar a yuxtaponerse dentro del proceso de integración política por el que discurren las primigenias Comunidades Europeas.

    This article deals with the study of the concept of nationality, in its judicial dimension and from the political point of view as well. It also deals with, the relationship between the concepts of nationality and European citizenship. Both concepts designate a particular status of an individual that serves as a frame for a wide range of rights and duties obtained by the mere fact of belonging to a Nation-State or of enjoying a particular citizenship, or, as it happens in the European Union context since the Maastricht Treaty signed in 1993, by the fact that two judicial and political realities now go together: nationality and citizenship; but they do not overlap in the process of political integration that the first European Communities undergo.
