This thesis focuses on social, political and military dynamics that characterized the War of Independence in the southeast peninsula. Specifically, this paper examines the War of Independence through the lenses of war and revolution, the two basic axes of conflict from 1808 to 1814. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part studies the key experiences related to the war located at the southern Spanish-Portuguese border: on the one hand, examining the relationship between Spanish and Portuguese agents, their distinct and complex aspects; one the other hand, focusing on the space of materialization and the legitimation of power arising from the new institutional organization. The second part delves into the central process of change in municipalities that have been selected for this study in response to chronological and geographical circumstances: taking into account not only the specific and different moments that occurred over those years, but also various existing territorial realities, since both political and institutional models of confrontation came to define a new scenario, which gave rise to the redefinition of the border. Overall, the results show the plural reality of the moment, manifested in the heterogeneity of interests represented by the various agents who lived in the region. Furthermore and equally remarkable, is the diversity of relationships between agents, as well as the significance and complexity of the changes and the political opening produced in the peripheral and border scenario.
