"La España Industrial", 1847-1853: un modelo de innovación tecnológica

Abstract

[spa] La tesis trata de los orígenes y formación de la primera empresa textil algodonera catalana y española que fue sociedad anónima desde 1847 a 1853. Se ocupa fundamentalmente de la innovación tecnológica y de la transmisión de conocimientos técnicos que posibilitaron la industrialización y la modernización de Cataluña y de España. Se introduce el tema mediante los acontecimientos históricos más destacados, a nivel nacional e internacional que sucedieron estos años y de los cuales "La España Industrial" fue protagonista, en tanto en cuanto se vio afectada. Entre ellos cabe remarcar el desarrollo de la guerra carlista, el asunto cubano de Narciso López, la revolución europea de 1848 y sus repercusiones internacionales (fundamentalmente las relativas a Italia) y a las repercusiones económicas en la propia Barcelona a través del Banco de Barcelona. Otros acontecimientos tienen un mayor carácter social y económico tales como el desarrollo extractivo minero y la construcción del ferrocarril, la cuestión arancelaria o el retorno a la industria lanera en poblaciones textiles como Sabadell, en la que se había desarrollado la industria textil algodonera, subsidiaria de la extraordinaria concentración de la actividad de las indianas de Barcelona y facilitada por la tradición textil existente en la ciudad. Se estudian a continuación los elementos humanos que conformaron la Sociedad; desde los directores como promotores de la Sociedad anónima, hasta los primeros accionistas que posibilitaron la recaudación del capital social. Así mismo se tratan los obreros, el número de los que trabaja en cada sección, atendiendo al trabajo infantil y al femenino y resaltando la transición de las relaciones laborales entre la obsoleta organización gremial y la nueva organización capitalista del trabajo fabril. Se hace especial hincapié en los técnicos tanto nacionales como extranjeros que contribuyeron a la erección, montaje y funcionamiento de la fábrica, así como el centro de formación de sus conocimientos técnicos. Los elementos físicos de la nueva fábrica: el solar, sus dimensiones y transformaciones y el agua como elemento constitutivo del suelo y como "input" imprescindible en el proceso de producción y los distintos edificios con sus tipologías constructivas, ya sean pisos, naves o posibles viviendas de obreros, o escuelas para su instrucción, es otro de los aspectos tratados en profundidad. Un tratamiento especial se da a las máquinas que se instalaron, tipología y casas constructoras, especificando sus características técnicas y el número de máquinas que se instalaron, así como la problemática que de su construcción se originó. La sección de tintes y estampación tiene un tratamiento especial. Se analizan a su vez los mecanismos de financiación que se utilizaron en la compra de las máquinas, el sistema de su transporte y la aceptación por el público español de las primeras telas que salieron de la fábrica montada con todos los adelantos técnicos y el intento de apertura de los primeros mercados en Egipto.

[eng] The thesis uses the analysis method of the industrial archaeology and studies a short period of the Catalan and Spanish industrialization focused on the leading manufacture of the cotton textile sector: "La España Industrial". The new factory of this society settled in "Santa Maria de Sants" is the motivational element. It was founded as a public society in Madrid January 28th, 1847. The basis of the analysis of the industrial evolution and transformation in the middle at the XIXth. century are: its placement, the buildings, the materials, the workers, the machinery and its technology and the factory's organization. The documentation of the firm allows an in depth examination of the industrial phenomenon and an understanding of its different estates: from the domestic system of one or several weaver in their own homes and with their own textile mill. To the factory system or the further step in an capitalism evolution through installing the most modern machinery and that consolidates a new social-class whom took a main role in the rapid industrial changes. The first part begins with the historical framework and the political and economical events that took place: some of them have the public society as the chief character. There is a second chapter devoted to human and organizational aspects of the firm; It analyzes the business policy of the Muntadas Brothers who made the constitution of the society possible. It deals as well with the role of the shareholders, the workers and the technicians that made possible the machinery operation and the teaching of the new technologies. The second part analyzes the physical components of the factory: the land and its water as an essential input tor the process, and the buildings. These last ones are considered as material needs to offer optimal efficiency and as a symbol of a disciplined labour organization. The third part analyzes the technical characteristics of the installed machinery: their fitting-up, their maintenance, their cost and financing, their transport, the contribution of the Catalan enterprises in the erection of the factory and finally, the success of their clothes in the national market.
