La tesis consta de un análisis pragmático de siete obras representativas de la novela de humor contemporáneo británico, con el fin de definir de forma objetiva las técnicas comunicativas que las diferencian como subgénero de la novela en general. Las novelas estudiadas son "Lucky Jim", "The fat english man", de Kingsley Amis, "Riotous assembly" y "Wilt" de Tom Sharpe, "A good man in Africa" de William Boyd, "Small world" de David Lodge, y "Money" de Martin Amis. Se establece en primer lugar una definición de genero que tiene en cuenta las técnicas comunicativas de las obras literarias y luego se procede a definir aquellos típicos de los chistes y actos de habla humorísticos. A continuación se procede a un análisis de las obras objeto de estudio, conjugando las características genéricas de la novela, con aquellas típicas del humor.
