________________________________________________ In the last 25 years there have been growing commercial contacts between the Chinese world and the western one that have derived into a continuously expanding flow of western products entering the Chinese market. Naturally, this has had a strong impact on translation in general, and specifically on the translation of these products brand names, out of its enormous complexity and commercial interest as much as for the lack of academic studies on this matter.

The present investigation stems from the following four motivations:

    1. In Spain at the moment of launching the present investigation a great emptiness existed in this respect and, given the increasing commercial contacts between Spain and China, it was essential that the Spanish entrepreneurial world be aware of this problem and its importance.

    2. The paper of the translator has been considered necessary for the translator specializing in the translation of brand names to meet a series of special conditions, such as deep knowledge of both cultures behind the languages, as well as of aesthetics, literature, psychology of sales, publicity, marketing, etc.

    3. The investigation attempted to deepen the analysis of the relation between literature and the advertising language in the Chinese language.

    4. There exists chaos in the translation between continental China and Taiwan.

The investigation has been made from a sample of 500 international brand names present in commercial centers, department stores and professional magazines. Commercial firms and publicity agencies have been consulted to gather information and documentation on the methods of translation they used. The information obtained has been analyzed from the point of view of the cultural values present in the same, and finally, a comparison has been made of the differences between the translations made in Taiwan and continental China.

The thesis is divided in 10 chapters, grouped in 5 parts.

1- In the first one, reference is made to general cultural aspects and to the theory of translation (chapters 1-4).

2- The second part deals with the methods and strategies for the translation of brand names (chapters 5-6).

3- The third part is dedicated to the statistical study of the collected data (chapter 7).

4- The fourth part, or eighth chapter, compares different translations used in Taiwan and continental China.

5- In the fifth and last block, a qualitative analysis is made of the information gathered (Chapters 9-10).

Since after several years of commercial contact with the Chinese market, the latter appears increasingly more attractive for foreign products, the translation of brand names is acquiring a great relevance. For that reason it is estimated that the present investigation not only has a practical application in the field of translation, but also in the ones of marketing and publicity.
