The use of chemical substances has become a necessity to maintain our current lifestyle. However, they can cause undesired effects in the environment and human beings. This Thesis addresses the development of mass spectrometry applications, using complementary analytical platforms, for target and non-target analysis of different kinds of compounds. Application of the developed methods has contributed to the comprehensive characterization of volatile compounds in complex samples, such as indoor air and e-liquids; the identification of the degradation routes of tramadol, under oxidative treatments; and the quantification of several groups of concerning chemicals in sludge, wastewater and end-of-life plastic wastes. Results were reflected in eight publications in international scientific journals.
